Coverage Guide
Individual tutor policies include both general liability and professional liability โ bundled at one price. Here's what each covers and why it matters.
Covers bodily injury and property damage to third parties.
General liability is sometimes called "slip and fall" coverage. It protects you if a student, parent, or other third party suffers a physical injury or property damage during โ or as a result of โ your tutoring services. For example, if a student trips over your bag during an in-home session and injures themselves, your general liability policy would cover the medical costs and any resulting legal defense.
General liability is often required by schools and school districts before they allow independent tutors on premises. It's included in all individual tutor policies from TutorInsurance.com.
What's covered
Covers claims of negligence related to your professional services.
Professional liability โ also called errors and omissions (E&O) insurance โ protects you if a client claims your tutoring services were negligent, inadequate, or caused them a financial loss. This is the most important coverage for tutors, because the nature of tutoring involves performance expectations that can result in claims.
For example: a student's parents could sue you claiming that your SAT prep tutoring was substandard and directly caused their child to score below their target, preventing college admission. Even if the claim has no merit, defending it without professional liability coverage means paying legal fees out of pocket.
Professional liability is included alongside general liability in all individual tutor policies.
What's covered
Covers data breaches involving student records and payment information.
As more tutoring moves online โ through Zoom, Google Meet, Google Classroom, and digital platforms โ the risk of a cyber incident increases. Cyber liability coverage protects you if student data (contact information, addresses, payment records) is compromised due to a hack, phishing attack, or accidental disclosure.
Tutors store sensitive information about minors. A breach can result in mandatory notification requirements, regulatory scrutiny, and potential liability to affected families. Cyber coverage helps pay for notification costs, credit monitoring, and legal defense.
What's covered
Required by most school districts. Covers defense costs for allegations.
Many school districts, after-school programs, and educational organizations require tutors to carry abuse and molestation coverage before allowing them on premises or approving a tutoring contract โ regardless of whether any allegation has ever been made.
This coverage provides legal defense costs if you face a false allegation of sexual abuse, molestation, or misconduct during the course of your tutoring work. The policy does not cover actual abuse โ it covers the cost of defending yourself against allegations that may be unfounded.
Abuse and molestation coverage can be added to your individual tutor policy. Ask for it when you complete the online quote.
